    SCLEROTHERAPY

Up to 25% of women and 18% of men will suffer from varicose veins. Most Americans with visible veins give the impression of aging and poor health. Most people want treatment, but are not aware that modern vein laser treatments are safe, effective, and virtually painless. The causes of unwanted vein exposure varies between individuals. Work related activities such as sitting or standing for a long period of time, pregnancy, or trauma are some other factors that cause varicose veins. However one of the primary causes is hereditary.

    • If both parents have varicose veins, your chances to develop the disease are close to 90%.
    • If one parent is affected, daughters have a 60% chance while sons have a 25% chance of developing the disease.
    • 60% of leg ulcers are due to varicose veins.
    • Left untreated, nearly 50% of patients will eventually experience chronic venous insufficiency.

Three common types of surface veins are Varicose, Reticular, and Spider veins. Varicose veins are about one-tenth of an inch in diameter. Some are large, about three-quarters of an inch. Often found between the ankles and thighs. They often resemble at least two veins twisted together. Reticular veins, also known as blue veins or feeder veins are smaller than varicose veins but have the same look as Varicose veins. Reticular veins are mainly spotted on the back of the leg or around the knee. Reticular veins ties into spider veins as well, which is called telangiectasia. Telangiectasia are smaller versions of reticular veins. They look like red or blue spider webs on the skin’s surface and can be found on the face or on the legs.

    What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a simple procedure performed by our skilled medical practitioners, which involves injecting a solution into the vein using a micro-needle, thereby causing the vein to collapse and fade from view. It is a virtually painless treatment which has been shown to be the most successful treatment available today for these tiny blood vessels. It does not require anesthesia and usually takes 15–60 minutes to complete, depending on the extent of the veins

If the sclerotherapy candidate has the following contraindications, he/she should not receive the procedure:
    • Pregnancy
    • Thrombophlebitis
    • Pulmonary emboli
    • Hypercoagulable states
    • Allergy to the sclerosing agents

What Can I Expect from Sclerotherapy?
Most patients are pleased with the difference that sclerotherapy makes, usually seeing an overall improvement of 80-90% following treatment. It is important to realize however that this treatment does not prevent new veins from emerging in the future and as time passes by, it may be necessary for touch-up treatments when new leg veins surface.

    Benefits of Vein Treatment
    • Sclerotherapy and laser therapy for veins are safe, time-proven procedures that cause little, if any discomfort.
    • Treatments provide an overall improvement in the appearance of surface veins.
    • There is minimal to no downtime depending on the severity of the veins.
    • Patients can immediately resume work and almost all normal activities.

MEDICATIONS TO AVOID PRIOR TO TREATMENT:
Discuss with us and your provider your exact medication list prior to stopping, but typically avoid your blood thinners (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, alcohol, omegas, flaxseed oil, fish oil, vitamin D3, and vitamin E) for 3-5 days prior to your treatment.

    Results from Sclerotherapy
Results after our Sclerotherapy treatment and/or Laser Vein Treatment are long-lasting and can be easily maintained. Treatment will eliminate your unwanted veins, but the underlying condition for having these types of veins will remain. Therefore, there is a very good possibility that you or may not need a “touch-up” from time to time thereafter. The time between the procedure and subsequent treatments depends on the individual, but it is not uncommon to have up to a year of clearance. Multiple treatments are usually necessary to remove the veins.
